Last month, several news outlets picked up the story of Derek Low, an entrepreneur who cashed out a haul of airline miles to be one of three passengers (of twelve possible) in the Singapore Airlines Suites Class. His article has sparked some discussion of exorbitant air travel. When it was launched in 2008, the Suites Class offered the most luxurious air travel experience ever conceived, complete with Dom Pérignon, a Ferragamo amenity kit, Bose headphones, Givenchy blankets and nightwear, and world class multi-course meals. Given that a (literally) golden ticket costs $18,400, one might expect this flight to be the peak of luxury. For the record I’ve never flown it but who wouldn’t want to. This is the ultimate expression of the experience economy. After all, you don’t have anything at the end of a flight other than a story, a memory and some good Instagrams. Read more here
